From today, Bulgarian consumers will be able to make contactless and online payments via Visa and Mastercard via Google Pay, the two companies have reported. Visa has introduced Google Pay in Bulgaria, in partnership with Google and Revolut fintech. From today, Google Pay will be available to all Mastercard users with physical or digital cards taken from the Bulgarian Revolut, Curve, Transferwise and Phyre online wallets. This is a significant change in the Bulgarian market, as 85% of Bulgarian devices use the Android operating system.

Bulgarian Visa cardholders are joining 19 European countries that use Visa and Google technology for contactless mobile payments. Google and Mastercard will work together in Bulgaria and 9 other countries. In the context of the COVID-19 epidemic, the service comes to Bulgaria at a time when contactless transactions in Europe have increased by up to 80%.

How it works

Google Pay is a free digital wallet that is compatible with devices running the Android operating system. The service allows for seamless mobile payments, whether you are shopping, online or anywhere else. Google Pay uses technology that replaces sensitive information in users’ current accounts with digital tokens to protect them from misuse.

In order to use Google Pay in Bulgaria, Android users must select the “Add Google Pay” button in mobile banking apps, from which they can add a Google Pay card. Once this is done, they will be able to access all the benefits of Google Pay through the appropriate banking app.

Users can use the phone to pay at any POS terminal without contact. To do this, they do not need to sign in to Google Pay or the app or have an internet connection, they only need to touch the phone to pay. This avoids having to carry a wallet or use a physical card. Google Pay also offers pre-set spending limits.
