Collahuasi copper mine is expected to grow closer with Canadian Teck Resources, when both companies are promoting large-scale expansion projects, said Jorge Gómez's executive director.
At the end of December, Collahuasi – an association of Glencore and Anglo American with Japanese companies – presented a $ 330 million expansion plan with environmental assessment, which would have an annual production of 710,000 tonnes.
"We have a lot of things talking about ourselves over time, both for us and our facilities and future developments," said Gómez.
As the executive explained, the tendency to "seek mutual synergies is to take advantage of the mutual benefit infrastructure (…) by referring to piping, power lines and marine concessions. It does not make sense for both companies to have similar similarities."
Collahuasi plans to build aqueduct to get water diverted from Quebrada Blanca, from Tecket to the mine, as a protective resource.
"In the end, we will have a surplus that we occupy," he explained.
Last month, Teck joined Sumitomo Metal Mining and Sumitomo Corp in Japan, resulting in the expansion of Quebrada Blanca, US $ 4,739 million.
