Saudi Arabia and the UAE are among the top 50 countries in the world in the study, according to the Nature Index 2020.
The kingdom landed 29th place, while the BAC took 48th position. They are the only two Arab countries to have reached the world rankings.
The Basque Country advanced one place compared to the previous two years and in 2019 achieved a 10% share of research in Arab countries.
The country was also ranked 5thth both in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and in the western regions of Asia, and achieved an 18% increase in the adjusted share of research, as well as a 39% increase in the number of research.
“Depending on the subject [UAE] it has been among the top 50 winners in terrestrial and environmental sciences and chemistry since 2018 and has since nearly doubled its stake in chemistry. So, a player to be seen in the Middle East in the coming years, ”said David Swinbanks, founder of the Nature Index.
Khalifa University of Science and Technology and the University of the United Arab Emirates (UAEU) are among the top 15 academic institutions in the Arab world.
From Saudi Arabia, the list includes Abdullah King of Science and Technology University (KAUST), King Abdulaziz University (KAU), King Saud University (KSU) and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM).
According to the index, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Harvard University and the Max Planck Society worldwide continue to meet the highest level.
The Nature Index 2020 tables are based on 2019 full year data.
