Huawei Pay is now available in Malaysia


Huawei Malaysia has announced the arrival of Huawei Pay, which will allow contactless NFC payments on a compatible phone. At the moment, Malaysia Pay only supports UnionPay credit cards issued by Huawei Pay by ICBC.

The mobile payment feature can be enabled through the Huawei Wallet app. It is supported in several major models including Huawei P10 and Mate 9. Mobile payment uses NFC and is authenticated with your fingerprint.

To improve security, Huawei Pay uses a device-specific token instead of a bank number to manage payments. The token is stored in the phone’s security chipset, which is completely insulated to prevent harmful activities. Huawei says that your bank card data will not be stored on your device or Huawei Pay servers and will not be shared with merchants.

Unlike Samsung Pay and Apple Pay, Huawei’s contactless payment system is limited to payment terminals that support UnionPay QuickPass. This means that you cannot use Mastercard or Visa-supported card terminals.

According to Huawei, you can use it in more than 20 million terminals worldwide across 51 countries around the world. Not only China and Malaysia, Huawei Pay is also marketed in Singapore, Thailand, Russia and Pakistan.

As an initial promotion, ICBC UnionPay credit card holders can get a refund of up to 50% for each transaction made with a minimum RM20 expense on Huawei Pay. Those who spend the most will also have the chance to win prizes for Huawei P40, Huawei FreeBuds 3 and Huawei Watch GT 2e.
